Rear-Admiral James Uchtred Farie, C.M.G., Royal Navy, Retired (25 November, 1873 – 17 September, 1957) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Farie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1895.[1]

A series of destroyer commands followed, and his record indicates that he "shows aptitude for destroyer work."[2]

Farie was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1905.[3]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Liffey on 1 December, 1905.[4]

Farie was appointed in command of Latona on 15 February, 1912.[5]

Captain

Farie was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1913.[6]

Farie succeeded Captain Reginald Y. Tyrwhitt in command of Adventure and as Captain (D) in the Second Destroyer Flotilla on 1 December, 1913.[7]

In November 1915, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Champion.[8]

He was Captain (D) of Thirteenth Destroyer Flotilla at the Battle of Jutland, commanding the flotilla from light cruiser Champion.[9]

He was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Cochrane in April, 1918.[10]

In an evaluation offered on 28 November, 1918, Rear Admiral Bruen noted that he considered Farie "of sound judgment, though perhaps not very quick in thought & action." Cochrane ran aground in the Mersey while under control of the pilot on 14 November, 1918 and eventually broke in two. The pilot's role in the stranding was not to spare Captain Farie of repercussions in the unfortunate loss.[11]

Post-war

Farie was reprimanded following a Court Martial on 18 February, 1919 for the stranding of Cochrane.[12]

Farie served as the Captain-in-Charge, Simonstown from 15 May, 1919 to 20 May, 1921.[13]

Farie was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 19 May, 1922.[14] He was advanced to the rank of Rear-Admiral on the Retired List on 8 October, 1923.[15]

Farie died at his Lymington home on 17 September, 1957, aged eighty-three.[16]
