Hugh Lindsay Patrick Heard
Admiral Hugh Lindsay Patrick Heard, C.B., D.S.O., (2 August, 1869 – 23 July, 1934) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Though his father S. T. Heard, Esquire lived in Ireland, Hugh Heard was born in Bangalore on 2 August, 1869.
He was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 April, 1892.[1]
Heard was promoted to Commander on 31 December, 1903. In 1904, he received Admiralty thanks for his invention of an instrument for determining Range Rate, perhaps similar to, but distinct from the Dumaresq.[2]
Heard was promoted to Captain on 30 June 1910.[3]
Heard was appointed captain of Magnificent on 13 May, 1912 and commanded her until July, 1913.
He was immediately appointed in command of H.M.S. Exmouth in July 1913, and would remain there until February, 1914.
Great War
In August 1914, he assumed command of the destroyer Grafton.
He was appointed to command the destroyer Duncan on 3 July, 1915.[4]
Post-War
He was appointed to command battlecruiser Renown on 7 January, 1919.[5]
Heard was also appointed in command of the battlecruiser Indomitable on 16 January, 1919.[6]
He was appointed to command the battleship Centurion on 1 March, 1919.[7]
He was promoted to Rear-Admiral on 26 February, 1921.[8]
He was promoted to Vice-Admiral on 7 July, 1926 and placed on the Retired List the following day in accordance with the Order in Council of 9 March, 1914.[9]
He was promoted to Admiral on the Retired List on 15 May, 1930.[10]
