Admiral Hugh Lindsay Patrick Heard, C.B., D.S.O., (2 August, 1869 – 23 July, 1934) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Though his father S. T. Heard, Esquire lived in Ireland, Hugh Heard was born in Bangalore on 2 August, 1869.

He was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 April, 1892.[1]

Heard was promoted to Commander on 31 December, 1903. In 1904, he received Admiralty thanks for his invention of an instrument for determining Range Rate, perhaps similar to, but distinct from the Dumaresq.[2]

Heard was promoted to Captain on 30 June 1910.[3]

Heard was appointed captain of Magnificent on 13 May, 1912. He grounded her on 16 June, 1913 and was informed that he was too late in anchoring her in the prevailing conditions. He was discharged from the ship on 1 July, and directly appointed in command of H.M.S. Exmouth, then operating with the Sixth Battle Squadron. He would remain there until February, 1914 when he was appointed to President for a signal course.[4]

Great War

In August 1914, he assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Grafton.

He was appointed to command the pre-dreadnought Duncan on 3 July, 1915 and remained in her until 15 April, 1917. On 23 April, he was appointed to Colleen as Senior Naval Officer, Berehaven, serving here as a Commodore, Second Class.[5]

Post-War

He was appointed to command battlecruiser Renown on 7 January, 1919.[6]

Heard was also appointed in command of the battlecruiser Indomitable on 16 January, 1919.[7]

He was appointed to command the battleship Centurion on 1 March, 1919.[8]

Heard was promoted to Rear-Admiral on 26 February, 1921.[9]

Heard was promoted to Vice-Admiral on 7 July, 1926 and placed on the Retired List the following day in accordance with the Order in Council of 9 March, 1914.[10]

Heard was promoted to Admiral on the Retired List on 15 May, 1930.[11]
