Admiral SIR Hugh Dudley Richards Watson, K.C.B., C.V.O., C.B.E., Royal Navy (20 April, 1872 – 22 May, 1954) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

On 1 January, 1903 he was promoted to the rank of Commander.[1]

Watson was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1908.[2]

Watson was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1914,[3] and was made captain of the armoured cruiser Essex on that same day.[4]

Leaving Essex in May, 1916, Watson was appointed in command of the battleship Bellerophon on 31 August, 1916.[5]

He commanded Canada from 13 February 1918 until 28 February, 1919.[6]

Flag Rank

He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 29 January, 1920, vice Nicholson.[7]

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed a Commander in the Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) on 3 June, 1922.[8]

On 8 May, 1925, he was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral, vice Goodenough.[9]

Watson was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 9 October, 1929, vice Bentinck, placed on the Retired List.[10] He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 April, 1930.[11]
