Howard Vernon Percy Weston
Lieutenant-Commander (emergency) Howard Vernon Percy Weston, R.N. (23 April, 1884 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Greenfields.
Weston was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 July, 1904.
Weston refused to take up an appointment as first officer in Espiegle on 6 September, 1910. His name was removed from the Navy List on 1 November, and his attempt to re-enter was refused on 10 February, 1911, as was his attempt to resign.
Weston checked in from Vancouver on 17 October 1914 to offer his services, and was informed that he would be accepted if he returned home. He left New York in S.S. Adriatic on 28 October and was placed on the Emergency List and was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 107 on 14 November, 1914.[1] He was also promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander, dated 15 July, 1912.
In January, 1915 T.B. 107 collided with something and grounded. Weston was warned by the Commander-in-Chief, Devonport to be more careful in future.
Weston's naval career ended ignominiously: In February, 1915 his service record was endorsed, "Adversely reported on by Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth. Has failed in in duties as Commanding Officer of Torpedo Boat and had to be superseded. Besides above accidents he failed to examine two suspicious trawlers, though ordered to do so. Considered his services cannot be utilised in any appointment with advantage. Their Lordships order his name to be removed from Emergency List."
