Vice-Admiral (retired) Horace Walker Longden, C.M.G., R.N. (12 January, 1877 – 4 January, 1953) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Longden was born in George Town, Demerara and gained twelve months' time on passing out of Britannia in July, 1892.

As a sub-Lieutenant, he was appointed to the second class protected cruiser Leander on 24 July 1897.[1]

Longden was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1898.

Longden was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1910.

He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1916.

Post-War

He was appointed command of the battleship Valiant on 1 April, 1919.[2]

He was appointed in command of the battlecruiser Tiger in May 1925.

Longden was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 2 August, 1927 and was placed on the Retired List the next day. He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral (retired) on 1 July, 1932.

World War II

Longden offered his services in 1939, but wound up serving with the Home Guard from 1940.
