Vice-Admiral (retired) Herbert Ward Dowding (11 April, 1843 – 11 May, 1915) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Dowding was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 18 September, 1865.[1]

Dowding was promoted to the rank of Commander on 25 March, 1878.[2]

Dowding submitted an essay to the Royal United Service Institution's competition of 1885 exploring the impact of the introduction on the ram, mine and torpedo on various aspects of naval training and operations. His work received honourable mention, but not the Gold Medal.[3]

Dowding was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1885.[4]

Placed on the Retired List on account of age on 11 April, 1898, Dowding was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 August, 1899 and to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 20 October, 1904.[5]
