Vice-Admiral Henry Rawdon Veale, Royal Navy, Retired (14 August, 1873 – 28 May, 1953) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

In October, 1893, Captain Durnford inspected torpedo boats taking part in manoeuvres and declared Veale "an exceptionally able young officer."[1]

Veale was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 February, 1894.[2]

Veale was censured for "gross negligence" in the premature firing of a 12-in gun aboard Colossus which occurred on 14 November, 1898.[3]

In May, 1902 Veale contributed to a "very creditable" prize firing in Crescent.

Veale was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1904. That same month, the Admiralty was pleased with Battle Practice competition results Veale had helped obtain for Home Fleet.[4]

Veale was appointed to the battleship Canopus on 9 May, 1905. In November 1906 a Court of Enquiry faulted him for an accident in weighing anchor. He left Canpous on 27 April, 1908 and busied himself in navigation, gunnery, war and Senior torpedo and gunnery courses until February 1909.

He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1912.[5]

He was appointed in command of the pre-dreadnought Exmouth on 6 February, 1914. He served in her until being appointed to Egmont, and as Chief of Staff to Rear Admiral Ballard on 1 November, 1916. He would remain in this post until 28 September 1918.[6]

He was appointed in command of the battlecruiser Indomitable 1 March, 1919.[7]

Veale was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 15 November, 1922 and placed on the Retired List the following day at his own request.[8]

Veale was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 21 January, 1928.[9]

Veale died in a nursing home at Wells, Somerset, on 28 May, 1953.[10]
