Vice-Admiral Henry Peter Routh, M.V.O., R.N., Retired (12 September, 1851 – 8 January, 1944) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

In December, 1864, Routh was ranked eighth in order of merit of thirty-six candidates accepted as first-class Naval Cadets following the entrance examinations.[1]

Routh was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 2 July, 1875.[2]

On 19 August, 1890, Routh was promoted to the rank of Commander with seniority of 30 June, 1890.[3]

On 22 May, 1892, he was appointed in command of the screw sloop Cruiser.[4]

He married Ethel B. Dauberry on 17 April, 1894.[5]

Routh was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December 1896 and relinquished command of Cruiser after more than four and a half years in command.[6]

In March 1900, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Juno, which served as an escort to the temporarily commissioned Royal Yacht, Ophir, between April - September 1901.

He was appointed to be a Member of the Fourth Class of the Royal Victorian Order in August 1902.[7]

He succeeded to the command of Victorious in January 1903.

Routh was placed on the Retired List on 12 September, 1906.[8]

Routh was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on the Retired List on 26 January, 1907 and to Vice-Admiral on 18 September, 1911.[9]

He succumbed to bronchitis and influenza in 1944.[10]
