Vice-Admiral Henry Hart Dyke, R.N., Retired (2 March, 1848 – 12 July, 1912) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born at Sittingbourne.

Dyke entered the service with the December 1860 intake term at Britannia, his examination scores ranking him nineteenth of thirty-four candidates accepted for naval cadetships.[1]

Dyke was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 23 April, 1872.

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1885.

Dyke commanded the third class protected cruiser Barossa in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1890. His ship acted as part of Fleet Number 2 which represented a hypothetical Hostile Fleet attacking British trade routes.[2]

Appointed in command of Sphinx from 20 August, 1890, Dyke was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1892 and did not give up command of Sphinx until 23 February, 1893.

He was appointed in command of the battleship Empress of India in June 1899, and of the second class protected cruiser Melampus on 25 May, 1901.[3]
