Rear-Admiral Henry Dalrymple Bridges, C.V.O., D.S.O. (17 January, 1881 – 1 February, 1955) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Bridges was born in Ewell, Surrey on 17 January, 1881.

Bridges was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1902.[1]

Bridges was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1910.[2] He was appointed as torpedo officer in Diamond and for T.B.Ds. on 27 August, 1909. Re-appointed once in this role, he left on 29 July, 1911 for an appointment in the torpedo training school H.M.S. Defiance and for command of mining vessels. He would become first and torpedo officer in Defiance on 18 September, 1912. He left this appointment on 1 July, 1913 to requalify in torpedoes at Vernon.[3]

Bridges was appointed to Hyacinth as first and torpedo officer on the Cape of Good Hope Station in August, 1913. He would be in her when the war broke out.[4]

The Great War

Bridges was re-appointed in Hyacinth as acting Commander on 12 March, 1915 before being promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1915. He was finally superseded in Hyacinth in November, 1917. Thereafter, his service record is difficult to read; he was appointed for service "under C.D.M." for torpedo duties on 5 April, 1918 before switching to a position on "Staff at Y.A.C.M." for torpedo duties on 15 June, 1918.[5]

Post-War

Bridges was appointed for service with Rear Admiral Commanding North America for torpedo duties on 27 March, 1919. On 5 April, 1920 he was moved to Work in the Torpedo Division.

Bridges was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1921 and superseded at the Torpedo Division on 15 September.[6]

Bridges was appointed in command of the light cruiser Curlew in November, 1924.

In the late 20s, he was Captain of H.M.S. Vernon.

Bridges was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 22 January, 1933 and was placed on the Retired List the following day in accordance with the provisions of Order in Council of 9 March, 1914.[7]

World War II

Bridges was appointed as a Commodore of Convoy to serve as a Commodore, Second Class, R.N.R.. In late October, he was assigned to the Liverpool Convoy Pool and served in that capacity until July, 1940 when he reverted to the Retired List.

He was called up for an additional stint inside the Admiralty in February, 1941, working with the "D. of P." (Director of Patrols?). This appointment was terminated after one year and Bridges's service in the navy had reached its end.[8]
