Captain Harry William Cuthbert Hughes, R.N. (24 January, 1879 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Hughes was born in Amwell, Middlesex. The Royal Navy thought this first name was Henry before his father wrote to the editor of the Navy List of 14 November 1894 to correct the matter.
Hughes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1901.[1]
Promotion from Lieutenant to Commander followed on 31 December, 1913.[2]
He was appointed to the battleship Dreadnought as her Commander (N) on 24 January, 1914.
Great War
On the bridge of Dreadnought on 18 March 1915, Hughes played an active part in the ramming and sinking of Otto Eduard Weddigen's submerged U 29.[3]
On 4 January, 1916, he was appointed to leave Dreadnought to await the commissioning of the new battleship Revenge, to be her navigator upon her commissioning. He moved to Marlborough upon the transfer of the flag in 1917.
Post-War
He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1918.[4]
Hughes was appointed in command of the scout cruiser Boadicea on 27 March, 1919.[5]
World War II
Appointed in command of the Armed Merchant Cruiser Aurania, vice Scott, from 25 September, 1939 to 15 January, 1940. He then reverted to the Retired List.
