Captain (retired) Harry Francis Cayley, D.S.O. (3 July, 1873 – 31 March, 1954) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Cayley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1894.

He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 31 December, 1904.

Cayley took a month-long gunnery course in May of 1911 at H.M.S. Excellent.

After taking a two-week minesweeping course at H.M.S. Actæon, Cayley was promoted to the rank of Commander on 3 July, 1913. He would take a similar course in May 1914.

In November 1914, Cayley was placed in command of H.M.T. Ameer, and for charge of a group of trawlers.

On 24 June 1915 he was appointed in command of the trawler Tervani. He left her when he was appointed in command of the yacht Caycia on 17 April, 1917. He served the entire war in a mine sweeping capacity, and in light of his wartime service, was promoted to the rank of Captain dated 11 November, 1918.

He reverted to the Retired List on 15 July, 1919.

World War II

He offered his services in 1939 but was informed it was unlikely he would be taken up on the offer. He served in the Home Guard from 1941.
