A serious accident occurred aboard T.B. 3 on the afternoon of 5 April, 1880. During tests of the evaporative capacity of the boiler one of boiler's tubes burst. The men in the stokehold cleared out quickly, and there were no injuries. Early estimates suggested repairs would take about a month.[3]

In 1881, there were twenty T.B.s in all; T.B. 3 was one of eleven boats serving out of Portsmouth.[4]

During the crisis following the Panjdeh Incident in 1885, T.B. 3 was put into commission as part of Admiral Phipps Hornby's Particular Service Squadron on 28 April, and was later involved in the year's Annual Manoeuvres at Berehaven.[5]

In 1895, she was one of four T.B.s of less than 125 feet in length stationed in Portsmouth along with twenty-three larger T.B.s.[6]
