Construction

T.B. 17 was one of two torpedo boats being built for Russia by Yarrow that were taken over by the Royal Navy after "very complicated negotiations" during the Russo-Turkish War.[6]

Service

In August 1878, shortly after her purchase, T.B. 17 was ordered to Portsmouth to take part in the naval review at Spithead along with her sister T.B. 18.[7]

In 1881, there were twenty first-class torpedo boats in all, and T.B. 17, and like most of her companions, she fitted for Whitehead. She was one of eleven boats serving out of Portsmouth.[8]

In 1895, she was one of ten first-class T.B.s stationed in Malta.[9] She remained at Malta until sold locally in 1907.[10]
