H.M.S. Venus was completed in 1897 as one of nine Eclipse class cruisers, but she served in the Great War as a destroyer depot ship.

Service

Venus was commissioned at Chatham on 9 November, 1897, by Captain Sir A. Berkeley Milne, Bart., for service in the Mediterranean.[9][10]

The third class protected cruiser Philomel relieved Venus on the Mediterranean Station in February, 1908, allowing Venus to join the Atlantic Fleet.[11]

She completed to special complement at Portsmouth on 20 December, 1911. In mid-1913, she was acting as depot ship for the First Destroyer Flotilla.[12]

In 1934, her bell was offered for sale to naval officers and others who might be interested, at the price of £5. Interested parties were to write the Director of Stores and were urged to include any special information which might convey the importance they attach to the bell, in light of the Admiralty's understanding that such items carry great sentimental value.[13]
