H.M.S. Topaze was the first of four third class cruisers of the "Gem" class completed in 1904 and 1905.
Service
A navigating party took her from Devonport to Birkenhead in November 1904, conducting a 24-hour full power trial en route.[8]
Assigned to the Channel Fleet, she left Portland for Sheerness on 30 November 1905 under the command of Commander Vivian Henry Gerald Bernard.[9]
On 22 October 1906, she arrived at Chatham Dockyard under the command of Henry Blackett, to refit and re-commission with a new crew.[10]
She left Cromarty on 29 July 1907.[11]
She arrived at Chatham on 4 December 1907 for her annual refit.[12]
In mid-1913, Topaze was serving with Third Fleet.[13]
