H.M.S. Proserpine was one of eleven Pelorus class cruisers completed for the Royal Navy between 1898 and 1901.

Service

In late 1906, Proserpine collided with the destroyer Cynthia and Commander Bruce was told to be more careful in future following a Court of Enquiry. It is not immediately clear how he was involved in this misadventure, as he had left command of Cynthia some years earlier.[7]

In mid-1911, Proserpine was part of the East India Squadron of the East Indies Station, but was serving in a detached manner on the coast of Somalia.[8]

In June 1912, Pelorus left Aden to relieve Proserpine,[9] which had been suffering from recalcitrant machinery issues.[10] Prosperine left the station for Port Said on 7 July.[11]

Proserpine commissioned at Malta on 26 February, 1913 for service in the Mediterranean under Tufton Percy Hamilton Beamish[12] She arrived at Beirut on 13 April, 1913.[13]

Proserpine left Malta for Corfu on 29 September, 1913 under his command.[14]

The cruiser returned to Sheerness, arriving on Christmas Day, 1913 after spending three years in the Mediterranean, destined to be replaced on station by the light cruiser Weymouth.[15] She was re-commissioned at Sheerness on 9 January, 1914.[16]
