Service

Natal was commissioned by Captain Stuart Nicholson at Chatham on 5 March, 1907, for service in the Fifth Cruiser Squadron.[7]

In 1910, Natal was the best gunnery ship of the sixteen in Home Fleet, Second Division and the Second Cruiser Squadron, scoring 90.48 – well ahead of the average 47.567.[8]

She recommissioned at Sheerness on 17 September, 1912.[9] In mid-1913, she was operating with the Second Cruiser Squadron.[10]

Alterations

In October 1914, the ship was to be given 13 Pattern 1582 Electric Radiators to warm cabins whose stoves could not be used for heating them.[11]

Radio

In mid-1913, it was decided to purchase a Type 9 Cruiser Auxiliary set for her.[12]
