H.M.S. Mallard was one of the Royal Navy's eleven "D" class destroyers.
Service
Swordfish was commissioned at Chatham on 6 January, 1899 by Lieutenant and Commander Alan Cameron Bruce to take the place of Mallard in the Medway Instructional Flotilla.[9]
She arrived at Sheerness with six other destroyers from the North Sea on 1 October, 1901.[10] Mallard was to then be replaced in the Medway Instructional Flotilla by Sturgeon, [11] her Lieutenant and Commander Hugh Percival Buckle transferring into Sturgeon.
Mallard was paid off until April 1902. In late May, she was one of four T.B.Ds. sent to the Mediterranean Station from Portsmouth under Commander E. S. Alexander-Sinclair.[12] Two of the boats went to Malta in early June, but Mallard initially remained in Gibraltar with Cynthia.[13] By 8 October, Mallard also went to Malta.[14]
In mid-1913, she was at Malta.[15] In November, she was ordered to return to England,[16] apparently being entrusted to Chief Gunner Michael Horrigan for the voyage.
