H.M.S. M 31 was one of nineteen "M" class monitors completed for the Royal Navy.

In 1922 she was renamed H.M.S. Melpomene and converted to use as a minelayer.

In 1941, she was renamed H.M.S. Menelaus.

Service

The ship was commissioned on 1 May 1923 with Special Complement. By 1934, at least, she was in Devonport.[8]
