H.M.S. Hawke was one of nine protected cruisers of the Edgar class completed between 1893 and 1896, and the only one lost in the war.

Service

On 11 July, 1900 on the annual manoeuvres Hawke was grounded through what Their Lordships later determined was "great carelessness and absence of precaution" on the part of Lieutenant (N) Edward Reeves, who had been lent to the ship just the day before.[8]

From at least mid-1913 through August 1914, she was with the Training Squadron in Queenstown.[9][10]
