H.M.S. Grafton was one of nine Edgar class protected cruisers completed between 1893 and 1896.

Service

She commissioned along with the first class protected cruiser Theseus at Chatham on 6 July 1895,[7] and the pair were ordered to convoy a group of torpedo boats to Gibraltar.[8]

Upon returning from China under command of Captain Frederic William Fisher, the ship paid off at Chatham on 4 October, 1899, her crew receiving the customary leave.[9]

In mid-May, 1900 she went to Sheerness from Chatham to undergo a four-hour steam trial in the North Sea to test recent repairs. She was to be placed into the Fleet Reserve if things went well.[10]

In August, she was one of six cruisers along with Sans Pareil ordered to receive wireless telegraphy systems.[11]

In mid-1913, she was with the Training Squadron in Queenstown.[12]

Captains

Dates of appointment are provided when known.

Torpedoes

In 1904, in a competition to investigate how rapidly submerged tubes could be fired four times sequentially, starting with the tube loaded and the bar out, in three trials the ship's crew was able to do this in 4:45 (port), 5:29 (starboard), and 1:41 (port).  The best time was achieved by Cressy at 50.75 seconds, though times of 3-5 minutes were more typical.[53]
