H.M.S. Ferret was one of six 26 Knotters, early Torpedo Boat Destroyers built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s.

Like the other 26 knotters, her useful life ran its course before the Great War.

Service

The Ferret was the first of the Royal Navy's latest class of "27 knotters". Her displacement at trial was 258 tons. At her trials on 10 July, 1894, after six runs on a measured mile, she averaged 27.62 knots, with one run producing 28.4 knots. On a three-hour trial, she made 27.51 knots with 175 psi and 361 rpm.[7]

On 24 January 1895, Ferret fouled a buoy as she was steaming into Devonport Harbour, damaging her port side to such a degree that some plates were knocked in three inches though no leaking resulted. At least one, if not both blades of her port propeller appeared to be damaged, as well.[8]

On 11 February, 1899 while returning under the command of Lt. Herbert John Temple Marshall with other T.B.Ds. of the flotilla to Devonport after a cruise in the Channel, Ferret's propeller entangled the painter of a boat, smashing the boat and throwing the three occupants into the drink. The men were rescued with some difficulty by the Seal under the command of John Campbell Watson. As this occurred, the two destroyers came together, damaging Seal's stern plates and Ferret's torpedo tubes. The ships were taken into Devonport Dockyard to have their damage repaired.[9]

Ferret operated as part of the Devonport Instructional Flotilla until being transferred to become a tender of the gunnery training school Cambridge on 2 February 1900.[10]

Ferret managed 24 knots at a full-speed trial at Plymouth on 29 June, 1900.[11]

She participated in a Naval Review for the King at Cowes from 31 July to 6 August, 1907, and was responsible for dismantling a defensive boom before the fleet assembled.[12]
