H.M.S. Eclipse was commissioned in 1897 as one of nine Eclipse class cruisers completed for the Royal Navy.

Service

In 1898-99, Eclipse was flagship of the East Indies Station, based in Bombay.

Eclipse re-commissioned at Devonport on 1 May, 1913 to join the Third Fleet at Devonport.[8]

Eclipse was mobilized in August, 1914 for service with Cruiser Force G (Twelfth Cruiser Squadron) covering the Western Approaches to the English Channel[9]. With her squadron sent to Halifax as close escort for the Canadian Troop Convoy to the UK on 11 September, 1914, which arrived in Plymouth on 13 October, 1914.[10] Temporary Flagship for the Squadron whilst Euryalus was refitting from 31 October, 1914.[11] Eclipse was paid off and disarmed at Devonport in March 1915.[12][13]

In 1938, her bell was among a number of ships' bells the Royal Navy offered for sale to officers and others interested. It commanded a price of between £3-£10 plus packing and shipping. Interested parties were to apply to win one at its stated price, stating any special attachment or claim they had to the item(s) applied for.[14]

Radio

In 1901 while assigned to the China Squadron, the ship was noted as having or being slated to receive a "1 to 52" W/T set.[15]

Captains

Dates of appointment are provided when known.

Torpedoes

In 1904, in a competition to investigate how rapidly submerged tubes could be fired four times sequentially, starting with the tube loaded and the bar out, the ship's crew was able to do this in 6 minutes, 34 seconds.  The best time was achieved by Cressy at 50.75 seconds, though times of 3-5 minutes were more typical.[50]
