H.M.S. E 44 was one of fifty-seven "E" class submarines completed in Britain before and during the Great War.

Service

On 26 April 1918 near 51deg 10.5' N., 1deg 53' E., E 44 torpedoed UB 57 in a night attack, but the torpedo failed to explode.[6]

She was one of four "E" class boats of the Second Submarine Flotilla reduced to a Care and Maintenance Party at Devonport on 25 November 1919 as part of a plan to reduce the Atlantic Fleet from four submarine flotillas to three.[7]

By May 1920, she was one of nine (later eight) "E" class boats of Group "J" in reserve at Rosyth, tender to Dolphin.[8]
