H.M.S. Champion was launched in 1915, the second of two light cruisers of the Calliope class.

Service

In February, 1916, Champion joined the Second Light Cruiser Squadron, responsible for supporting the Battle Cruiser Fleet.[7]

In May, 1916, Champion was assigned as the flotilla cruiser for the Thirteenth Destroyer Flotilla,[8] leading twelve destroyers at the Battle of Jutland as it screened the First Battle Cruiser Squadron.[9][10]

At the end of 1920, she was at reduced complement.[11]

Champion paid off into dockyard control at Portsmouth on 3 October, 1924.[12]

She was re-commissioned at Portsmouth on 7 May, 1925 for use as a Gun and Torpedo School Cruiser.[13]

Paid off into Dockyard Control at Portsmouth on 14 February, 1934.[14]

Alterations

Champion was fitted with a director in January, 1918. This alteration required her pole mast to be replaced with a tripod mast for greater rigidity.[15]

At some point likely after the end of the war, she received a Dreyer Turret Control Table in her TS.[16]
