In March 1913, Ariadne was converted to a training ship for stokers.

Ariadne completed conversion in Devonport Royal Dockyard to a minelayer on 20 March, 1917, her armament being reduced to four 6-in guns and one 4-in H.A. mount with a capacity of 400 mines.[9]

In June of 1917, she was assigned to the Minelayer Squadron.[10] She did not last long in this new role, being torpedoed by UC 65 on 26 July, 1917 with over 30 men losing their lives.[11]
