Commander George Mytton Hill, (30 June, 1883 – 10 July, 1935) served in the Royal Navy. He is notable for having failed four qualification tests.

Life & Career

Born in Hayes, Kent, the son of "Arthur", Colonel commanding the Third Cheshire Regiment.[1]

Hill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1904.[2]

In 1908 during an appointment in Africa, Hill did not impress Captain Leveson, who wrote "I should not describe him as having no zeal but he appears to be quite incapable of carrying out any work when he has to take charge of men. He is however a careful W/K [watch keeper] at sea keeps station well & in his particular branch of his profession I am competent[six] of his ability. He has no command nor is he ever likely to have any. Recommend to take up surveying or possibly navigation."[3]

Hill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1912.[4]

Hill was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1918.[5]

Hill was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 31 October, 1922.[6]
