Captain (retired) George Macgregor Skinner, R.N. (13 May, 1883 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Lee, Kent the son of Colonel G. J. Skinner, D.S.O..

Skinner was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1905. He was due to arrive in London in S.S. Modalvia about 28 July 1906 after being invalided from Encounter on the Australia Station in late May. He would not be fit until 19 December 1906. On 29 May 1907 he was awarded a gratuity for an injury received.

Skinner was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1913 right after being appointed to the light cruiser H.M.S. Dartmouth. He served in her on the East Indies Station until 30 September, 1915. His next appointment was two months in Royalist, which was still working up for service. Perhaps it was in this role that he was injured, as on 26 March 1916 he was admitted to Haslar Hospital with a possible fracture to his left foot. It seems it was bad, as he was declared fit for shore service only on 18 July following which he was appointed to assist the Director of Naval Equipment.

On 17 October 1916 he was lent to Ribble to take the ship to Barrow. This accomplished, he was placed in command of the sweeping sloop Crocus.

Skinner was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1917 and left Crocus in June 1918 to join the light cruiser H.M.S. Yarmouth.

Skinner was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 24 June, 1922 and was promoted to the rank of Captain (retired) on 13 May, 1928.
