George Hamilton D'Oyly Lyon

Admiral SIR George Hamilton D'Oyly Lyon, K.C.B. (3 October, 1883 – 20 August, 1947) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Lyon was born in Bengal, where he was raised by his mother, Ella.[1]

Lieutenant on 3 October, 1904.[2]

He married Helenora Mary Pierson on 3 August, 1912, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander on 3 October.[3]

Lyon served as Gunnery Officer of H.M.S. Monarch throughout the entire war, from 7 April, 1914 through 13 February, 1919.[4]

Lyon was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1918.[5]

Post-war and World War II

Lyon was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1922.[6]

Lyon was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 25 November, 1934.[7]

Lyon was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 17 June, 1938.[8]

Lyon was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 15 June, 1942.[9]

Lyon was deemed medically unfit and retired on 4 August, 1943. He was admitted to the Royal Naval Hospital at Haslar on 26 August, 1946 with pulmonary tuberculosis and disseminated sclerosis. He was transferred on 2 January, 1947 to King Edward VII Sanatorium in Sussex, where he died on 20 August.[10]
