George Bingham Powell

Vice-Admiral George Bingham Powell, R.N., Retired (12 January, 1870 – 27 May, 1952) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Life & Career

Powell was specially promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1903 for services in China in 1900.[1]

He was appointed to Bulwark as executive officer in March, 1910.[2]

On 31 December 1910, Powell was promoted to Captain. He left Bulwark on 2 January, 1911 and undertook a succession of Signal, War, Gunnery and Torpedo and Navigation courses that took until 8 December to complete. He married Ada Patricia FitzGerald Bowes on 19 December, 1911 to round out a year of professional development.[3]

He was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Gibraltar on 23 October, 1912 and then for command of Egmont on 13 March, 1913.[4]

Great War

Powell remained in Malta during the early part of the war. On 24 December, 1915, he was additionally appointed as Chief of Staff to Vice-Admiral Limpus, who was then Admiral Superintendent, Malta Dockyard. Superseded as such on 1 November, 1916, he was made Liaison Officer of Patrols and Routes on the staff of French Rear Admiral Faton, who was French Rear Admiral of Patrols.[5]

Powell was appointed to command H.M.S. Devonshire on 10 November, 1917.[6] He would remain in her until she was reduced on 21 May, 1919.[7]

Post-war

Powell was appointed in command of the battleship Monarch on 30 August, 1919. He would remain in command until 8 July, 1921.[8]

Powell was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 16 June, 1921.[9]

Powell was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 8 July, 1926.[10]

He died on 27 May, 1952 of a coronary occlusion.
