Admiral George Augustus Giffard, C.M.G., Royal Navy (20 February, 1849 – 23 September, 1925) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

On 1 July, 1887, Giffard was given command of the sloop Wanderer.[1] He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1890.[2]

In April 1896, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Fox.

Giffard was appointed Commodore, Second Class in the Newfoundland Fisheries Division on 23 February, 1899.[3]

He was appointed as captain of the battleship Hannibal on 10 May, 1902.[4]

Flag Rank

Giffard was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 October, 1903, vice Rolfe.[5]

Giffard was appointed Admiral Superintendent of Chatham Dockyard on 5 February, 1907.[6] He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral dated 1 September, vice Groome.[7]

Giffard was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 19 July, 1911, vice Barlow,[8] and, in accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 16 May, 1913.[9]

He was admitted to Haslar Hospital on 7 September, 1921 and was diagnosed with rectal cancer. He was required to return in October, 1924 and have an inguinal colostomy performed. Whether this helped or not, he lived another eleven months, dying on 23 September, 1925.[10]
