Admiral George Augustus Giffard, C.M.G., Royal Navy (20 February, 1849 – 23 September, 1925) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

On 1 July, 1887, Giffard was given command of the sloop Wanderer.[1] He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1890.[2]

In May 1892, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Bonaventure, well in advance of her completion.[3]

In April 1896, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Fox.[4]

Giffard was appointed Commodore, Second Class in the Newfoundland Fisheries Division on 23 February, 1899.[5]

Also in February 1899, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Charybdis.[6]

He was appointed as captain of the battleship Hannibal on 10 May, 1902.[7]

Giffard was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 October, 1903, vice Rolfe.[8]

Giffard was appointed Admiral Superintendent of Chatham Dockyard on 5 February, 1907.[9] He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral dated 1 September, vice Groome.[10]

Giffard was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 19 July, 1911, vice Barlow,[11] and, in accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 16 May, 1913.[12]
