Commander (retired) Frederick William Hawkridge, D.S.C., R.N. (23 August, 1882 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Hawkridge was promoted to the rank of Mate with seniority to 28 August, 1913.[1]

Hawkridge was appointed to the destroyer Doon on 30 November, 1914.[2] On 16 December, 1914, he was reported wounded in the chest during bombardment. He was sent to Haslar in January 1915, and was expected to require three months there.[3]

Hawkridge was assigned to the monitor M.25 on 25 August, 1915.[4]

Hawkridge was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority to 28 August, 1915.[5]

Hawkridge was appointed in command of the patrol boat P24 on 1 November, 1917.[6] He was involved in action with an enemy submarine on 21 December, 1917 and was awarded the D.S.C. for his service on this occasion, gazetted 16 March 1918.[7]

After the war, Hawkridge served in fishery protection vessels, commanding Colne and Cherwell. In February 1921 he was commended for checking incursions by French fishing vessels. He also brought to bay the dread French crabber Abri du Marin, who was arrested and convicted.[8]

Hawkridge was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 28 August, 1923.[9]

Hawkridge was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 23 August, 1927.[10]
