Vice-Admiral Frederick Owen Pike, C.M.G., D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (23 February, 1851 – 5 April, 1921) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Pike was ranked fourteenth in order of merit of thirty-six candidates accepted as first-class Naval Cadets following the entrance examinations of December, 1864.[1]

Pike was appointed to Vigilant on 1 September, 1874.

Pike was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 2 July, 1875.[2]

Pike narrowly escaped a bad mark on his record when he was honourably acquitted in a Court Martial in December 1876 following reports that he had signed certificates of some kind in Vigilant in May without first examining them.[3]

On 26 August, 1884 Pike was appointed in command of the schooner Harrier. He remained with her through a paying off and recommissioning in January, 1885 and only left her when she paid off on 11 April, 1888. He took passage home in the Thalia.

On 10 September 1888, Pike was appointed Lieutenant and Commander of the composite screw gunvessel Rifleman. She operated on the Southeastern Coast of America until paying off on 1 July, 1889, and Pike was promoted to the rank of Commander with a seniority date of 30 June, 1889.[4]

Pike married Annie E. M. Pohlman on 27 December, 1893 at Melbourne.[5]

Pike was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December 1895.[6]

In September 1898, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Minerva.

Pike became Captain of the second class protected cruiser Gladiator in October 1900.

Pike was superseded as Captain-in-Charge of the North of Ireland Coast Guard District and retired due to age on 23 February, 1906. He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on the Retired List on 18 September, 1906 and to Vice-Admiral on 10 February, 1911.[7]
