Admiral Sir Frederick C. Learmonth, as a Vice-Admiral, 1925.
© National Portrait Gallery, London.

Admiral SIR Frederick Charles Learmonth, K.B.E.C.B., R.N., Retired (14 January, 1866 – 3 June, 1941) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Learmonth was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 24 August, 1887.[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1900.[2]

Captain

Learmonth was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1906.[3]

He was appointed to President on 20 April, 1908, for service in the Hydrographic Department.[4]

Great War

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 4 June, 1917.[5]

Learmonth was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 11 March, 1918, vice Phipps Hornby.[6] His future in the Navy had been decided at a meeting of the Board of Admiralty on 15 June, when four of the five Sea Lords (Burney apparently wavering) voted that he be retired on promotion to Flag Rank under Section III of the Order-in-Council of 9 March, 1914.[7] That he was not retired immediately is surprising.

Post-War

He was appointed a Commander of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) on 1 January, 1919.[8]

He was placed on the Retired List at his own request, "in order to facilitate the promotion of younger officers", on 8 March, 1921.[9]

Learmonth was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 8 October, 1923.[10] In the King's Birthday Honours of 3 June, 1925, Learmonth was promoted Knight Commander of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.).[11] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 August, 1927.[12]
