Francis John Foley

Vice-Admiral Francis John Foley, Royal Navy (2 December, 1855 – 5 March, 1911) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Foley was promoted to Lieutenant on 9 March, 1876[1] and appointed to Vernon on 9 September, 1883 to qualify as a torpedo Lieutenant.[2]

He was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 72 and additional to the Pembroke for torpedo duties on 30 October, 1888.[3] He was appointed to the sloop Basilisk on 12 August, 1893.[4]

Foley was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1895.[5]

On 12 March 1901, he assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Andromeda.[6]

Foley next served as captain of Illustrious from March 1902 through July 1903.

He was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to King Edward VII on 24 May, 1905, vice Chisholm-Batten.[7]

He was captain of the New Zealand from January to July of 1906.

Foley was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 July, 1906.[8]

He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 3 January, 1911, vice Graham.[9]

His only son, Lieutenant Thomas Algernon Fitzgerald Foley of the 1st Battalion Norfolk Regiment, was killed in action on 25 October, 1914.[10]
