Admiral Francis Herbert Mitchell, C.B.D.S.O., R.N., Retired (10 January, 1876 – 7 March, 1946) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Early Life & Career

"Commander Francis H. Mitchell (Commander for Gunnery Duties) failed to exercise proper supervision by allowing a drill order to be used for other than drill purposes, and he will be relieved in his appointment."[1]

Great War

Mitchell was cautioned to be more careful in future after his destroyer Eclipse collided with a Swedish barque on 8 September, 1914.[2]

In recognition of his service with the Royal Naval Division at Gallipoli, Mitchell was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order on 7 November, 1915.[3]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Exmouth on 1 November, 1916.[4]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Bellerophon on 12 October, 1918.[5]

Post-War

He was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (C.B.) on the occasion of the King's birthday on 3 June, 1924.[6]

Mitchell was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 21 January, 1933, vice Field.[7]
