Rear-Admiral Francis Durrant, C.M.G., Royal Navy (24 June, 1837 – 6 December, 1896) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Durrant was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 2 September, 1869.[1]

Following the Prince of Wales's tour of India Durrant was promoted to the rank of Captain on 15 May, 1876.[2]

Durrant was appointed in command of Canada on 1 May, 1883. He was appointed Governor to Prince George on 1 June.[3] He was appointed a an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (C.M.G.) on 9 August, 1884. On 12 August he was permitted to resign his command of Canada in order to continue as Governor to Prince George.

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Hotspur on 30 April, 1885, and paid her off on 7 August. He was appointed in command of the turret ship Ajax, First Reserve ship in the Clyde District, on 27 November. He was superseded by Robert Hornby Boyle on 28 November, 1888, and on 15 July, 1889, he was appointed to President, additional, for service in the office of the Admiral Superintendent of Naval Reserves.[4]

Durrant was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral dated 29 January, 1891, vice D'Arcy-Irvine.[5]

In accordance with the provisions of the Orders in Council of 22 February, 1870 and 5 August, 1875, Durrant was placed on the Retired List dated 27 August, 1893.[6]
