Commander (retired) Francis Beversham Hanson, (8 November, 1890 – 10 September, 1955) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Hampstead, Hanson's mother was listed as his guardian when he joined the navy.

Though his Service Record indicates he joined Britannia, it appears that Hanson entered Royal Naval College, Dartmouth directly – part of the Royal Navy's transition from training new cadets in H.M.S. Britannia as the new scheme was being primed.[1][Fact Check]

He was placed in the battleship Albion on 15 May, 1907. In January, 1909 Captain Limpus noted that Hanson lacked energy. On 17 March 1909 he was appointed to Swiftsure in the Mediterranean.

Hanson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 January, 1913.

Hanson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 January, 1921, later adjusted to 29 April, 1921.

Hanson was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 8 November, 1933.

World War II

Called up in July 1939 for three weeks' anti-submarine training at Osprey. In November he was placed in command of 30 Group of anti-submarine trawlers. On 4 April 1940 he was appointed to Lucifer as Assistant Staff Officer (O), Swansea.
