Commander Evan Campbell Bunbury (23 November, 1881 – 15 October, 1918) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Bunbury was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1902.[1]

He was appointed to the torpedo training school H.M.S. Vernon on 28 May, 1912.[2]

Great War

Bunbury was re-appointed to Lion as torpedo officer on 30 May, 1915,[3] and was was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June.[4]

He created the Bunbury Enemy Torpedo Calculator, apparently upon first arriving in Lion. His service record exclaims in an entry for August, "Torpedo Safe Range Indicators. great credit due to Cd. Bunbury & Lt JG Crace for the great skill shown in the production of these instruments. G. 21744/15." A November entry amplified, "Torpedo Clear Range Indicator. T. Ls. appreciation of zeal and ability in working out proposals G 32949/15."[5] Captain Chatfield had somewhat offset this praise with an earlier S206 note from 21 May that Bunbury was "[a]n exceptional specialist & consequently not more than average in his ordinary duties. zealous and reliable."[6]

By November, 1916, Chatfield was recording that Bunbury had "acted as Executive officer of the ship in action with great skill & courage." He was also commended by Rear-Admiral Fitzherbert for his work installing telephones and searchlights in January, 1918.

From 13 January, 1917, he was working on the Naval Staff of the Department of the Director of Torpedoes and Mining, borne in President.[7][8] He left this post on 8 September, 1918 when fate sent him to Arrogant for training in Coastal Motor Boats.

This work proved deadly for Evan Bunbury. While seemingly still in this training, he was noted as "missing. Feared drowned 15th October 1918."[9] Kindell concludes that he was lost in Template:UK-CMB71A following a collision off the Belgian coast on that day which damaged the small torpedo craft.[10] His service record has "Drowned 15th Oct 1918" written boldly across its base.
