Commander R.N.R. (retired) Ernest Mortimer Hawkins, D.S.O., R.D. (11 September, 1880 – ) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

Hawkins was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 18 March, 1911.[1]

Hawkins was in command of the destroyer Thrasher on 8 February, 1917 when she blew UC 39 to the surface with a single well-placed depth charge.[2] This feat would earn Hawkins his D.S.O., Vice-Admiral Commanding, East Coast of England Stuart Nicholson writing, "It was owing to the able manner and good judgment with which Lt. Hawkins handled his ship that the capture of Germ. S/M UC 39 was effected."[3]

On 1 September, 1917, he was appointed in command of the patrol boat P34.[4]

Hawkins was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 18 March, 1919.[5]

Hawkins was placed on the Retired List owing to non-sea service at the rank of Commander R.N.R. on 1 January, 1923.[6]
