Rear-Admiral Edward Cecil Villiers, C.M.G., Royal Navy, Retired (16 February, 1866 – 16 April, 1939) was an officer of the Royal Navy. He enjoyed making watercolour paintings of naval life.

Early Life & Career

At the examination for naval cadetships Villiers placed ninth out of thirty-seven successful candidates.[1]

Villiers was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1890.[2]

Villiers was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1901.[3]

Captain

He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1906.[4]

In December 1908, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Charybdis.[5]

In the Birthday Honours of 4 June, 1917, Villiers was appointed a Companion in the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (C.M.G.) for his war services.[6] He was placed on the Retired List, with the rank of Rear-Admiral (Retired); from 23 October, 1917.[7] His future in the Navy had been decided at a meeting of the Board of Admiralty on 15 June, when all five Sea Lords voted that he be retired on promotion to Flag Rank under Section III of the Order-in-Council of 9 March, 1914.[8]
