Captain Donald Cameron Bingham, (8 August, 1882 – 23 July, 1946) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Bingham was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 2 May, 1907.[1]
Bingham was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 11 December, 1914.[2]
In 1917, Bingham was Fleet Gunnery Officer on the staff of Admiral Commanding Atlantic Fleet. When the Royal Navy sent Lt. Cdr. Richard Thornton Down to the U.S. to exchange ideas, Down concluded that Bingham wielded an outsize degree of influence on gunnery direction in the U.S. Navy. Most vitally, he seemed to resist development of a better system of gunnery plotting, and impeded the adoption of the Ford Rangekeeper.[3]
Bingham was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 July, 1919. By 1924, he was working in Naval Operations.[4]
Bingham was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1925. By 1930, he was in command of Mine Squadron 1 and Oglala.[5]
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander Donald Cameron Bingham, United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession as Fleet Gunnery Officer on the Staff of Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, during World War I.
