Admiral Crawford Maclachlan, C.B., Retired (11 July, 1867 – 21 April, 1952) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Edinburgh.

Maclachlan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1890.[1]

Maclachlan's Commander in the Prince George, Sydney Fremantle, later described him as, "a hard-bitten little Scotsman, who was an accomplished seaman, most thorough in his methods, and had a quiet but forceful habit of command which inspired great confidence."[2]

Maclachlan was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1908.[3]

He was appointed in command of the new battlecruiser Lion on 19 September, 1911.[4]

He was placed in command of Indomitable in November 1911 while she had a nucleus crew for a three month period of refit.[5]

Maclachlan was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Sirius at Devonport on 1 February, 1912, recommissioning her for service in the West Atlantic.[6]

He was appointed in command of the battleship King Edward VII on 22 June, 1914.[7]

Great War

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 3 June, 1918.[8]

Post-War

Maclachlan was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 17 February, 1920, vice Hickley.[9] He was appointed Rear-Admiral and Senior Naval Officer on the Yangtze in succession to Rear-Admiral George H. Borrett on 17 October, 1921.[10]

Maclachlan was promoted to the the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 July, 1925, vice Nicholson.[11]

He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 April, 1930.[12]
