MacLean was appointed in command of the destroyer Lee on 16 September, 1903.[2]

Admiral Bacon commended him for the precision in station-keeping which his charges were able to attain, though the landing operation was seemingly cancelled.[7]

Post-War

MacLean was mentioned in despatches 8 March, 1920 for valuable services rendered in the Gulf of Finland in command of the Second Destroyer Flotilla, the Rear Admiral commanding the Baltic forces reported, "I find it hard to express the value of this officer's services example".[8]

After being superseded as Captain (D) of 2 D.F. on 29 April, 1920, MacLean was appointed to the light cruiser Cardiff on 1 January, 1921 to take command when she re-commissioned, which occurred on the 12th. He served as Flag Captain to Rear Admiral Tyrwhitt in her until 3 June, 1921.[9]

He was appointed in command of the light cruiser Centaur in April, 1925.

MacLean was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 2 July, 1927.[10]

MacLean was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 6 October, 1931.[11]

MacLean was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 15 February, 1932.[12]
