Commander (retired) Claude Philip Champion de Crespigny (3 August, 1880 – 28 May, 1939) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Sir Claude Champion de Crespigny, Baronet was born in Malden, Essex and gained eight months' time on passing out of Britannia.

Champion de Crespigny was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1901.[1]

Champion de Crespigny was granted leave to visit Germany on half pay in May, 1906.[2]

Champion de Crespigny was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1909.[3]

Champion de Crespigny was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 17 August, 1910, eligible to apply for a step to Comamnder on reaching the age of 40. Nonetheless, he attended Mine-Sweeping Courses varying in length from nine to fourteen days at Vernon in April or May from 1911 through 1914.[4]

Champion de Crespigny was appointed in command of the monitor M.32 on 6 June, 1915. On 16 September 1916 a telegram informed the Admiralty that he was soon to be invalided from her. On 7 October, he was in a hospital ship, likely to be sent home, suffering from an undiagnosed ailment. In mid October, he was in Malta and his sickness appears to be described as gastric.[5]

Champion de Crespigny was mentioned in despatches for his services in the Eastern Mediterranean up to 30 June, 1916.

In 1917, the Admiraltry expressed its appreciation to Champion de Crespigny for salvaging a vessel at night in a rough sea.[6]

He was appointed in command of the monitor M.24 on 24 July, 1917.[7]

Champion de Crespigny was mentioned in despatches for services in the blocking operations at Zeebrugge and Ostend on 22-23 April, 1918.[8]

Post-War

Champion de Crespigny was promoted to the rank of Commander on 24 December, 1919 in recognition of services rendered during the war, antedated to 11 December, 1919.[9]
