Captain (retired) Christopher John Frederick Wood, D.S.O., (1 November, 1884 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Wood ranked fourth among 62 successful candidates in examinations for entry to the Britannia intake term of September 1899, with 2753 marks.[1]

Wood was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1906.[2]

Wood was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1914.

Great War

He served as gunnery officer in Mars at some point.

Wood was appointed to Cæsar as gunnery officer in November, 1914 but was ordered home on 10 December. On the 19th he was appointed as first and gunnery officer in Undaunted. On 8 April, 1915, he ceased being first officer, but took on the (G) duties of the Third Destroyer Flotilla. He was to remain in Undaunted until 24 November, 1917, when was was appointed to Coventry as gunnery officer and for staff duties.

On 24 July, 1918, Wood quit Coventry for Dido for gunnery duties with the Tenth Destroyer Flotilla. On 12 October, 1918, he moved into Spenser to provide the same services.[3]

Wood was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1918.[4]

In April, 1921, he was working to revise the handbook for Naval Rangefinders and Mountings.[5]

Wood was placed on the Retired List on his own request, being advanced to the rank of Captain, on 1 November, 1930, his 46th birthday.[6]

World War II

Wood was called up on 17 January, 1941 with a rank of Captain (retd), but health concerns dominate his service record. After a bout of influenza, he was able to return to duty in November, 1943. He reverted to the Retired List on 27 December, 1945.[7]
