Admiral SIR Charles Holcombe Dare, K.C.M.G., C.B., M.V.O., Royal Navy, Retired (9 November, 1854 – 6 August, 1924) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Dare was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 December, 1879.[1]

Dare was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1894.[2]

Captain

Dare was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1900.[3]

Dare assumed command of the new heavy cruiser Berwick in November 1903.[4]

After a brief stint in command of the battleship Ramillies in 1906,[5] he was appointed to President for command of the Eastern Coast Guard District on 12 September, 1906.[6]

Dare was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 12 March, 1909, vice Fegen.[7] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 12 July.[8]

Great War

On 7 November, 1914, Dare was granted a temporary Commission as Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve.[9]

On 20 February, 1915, Dare was appointed Senior Naval Officer at Milford Haven, and took up the appointment on 26 February.[10] On 5 March he was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List.[11] On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 4 June, 1917.[12] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 25 August, 1918.[13]
